Tarindu Bopage – ‘Most Promising Young Sailor’ at Janashakthi Sailing Nationals 2009

 
 
Tarindu Bopage clinched the award for the ‘Most Promising Young Sailor’ at the Janashakthi Sailing Nationals 2009 held at the Bolgoda Lake recently.

Most Promising Young Sailor - Tarindu Lakshan Bopage (Ruhunu Sailing Association). Nominated for the IODA (international Optimist Dinghy Association) Asian Sailing Championship 2009 in Malaysia from 12-20 December. He also received a Rs. 50,000/= cash donation from Janashakthi for his training and development.
 
Miss Aitana Elapata Gunaratne, Master. Joshua Jayaratne, Miss. Kimberly Karpinski were the other nominees for the IODA Asian Sailing Championships 2009 in Malaysia. Sponsored by Janashakthi Insurance for the seventh consecutive year, this much anticipated Regatta was organised by the Yachting Association of Sri Lanka with the Ceylon Motor Yacht Club as the Hosting Club, and attracted a large number of entries this year.
 
Acknowledging the great popularity and vast potential of the game, Janashakthi Insurance Company stepped in, in 2006, and began sponsoring this annual tournament. It is today the only high ranking corporate in Sri Lanka engaged in promotion of hockey in Sri Lanka.
 
The Regatta was open to members of CMYC (Ceylon Motor Yacht Club), RCYC (Royal Colombo Yacht Club), BWSC (Bentota Wind Surf Club), RSA (Ruhuna Sailing Association) and the SLNSC (Sri Lanka Naval Sailing Club) and governed by the International Sailing Federation Racing Rules 2009- 2012, and also, The Sailing instructions.
 
Managing Director Janashakthi Insurance PLC. Mr. Prakash Schaffter said that the Company was honoured to be associated with an event of this nature for the seventh consecutive year. “Sports plays a critical role in the lives of human beings. President of the Yachting Association of Sri Lanka, Mr. Chandima Gunawardene thanked Janashakthi for its long and continued sponsorship of this now popular annual event. “We are grateful to Janashakthi for coming forward and supporting sailing as a sport among a large and growing base of such enthusiasts”.
