Though the South African team is without some senior players the new captain Ashwell Prince, the first non-white cricket captain of South Africa, is quite confident of a good performance. Graeme Smith and Jacques Kallis are both recovering from surgeries whilst the former captain Shaun Pollock has pulled out from the first test to be with his wife at the birth of their 2nd child. The South African batting will primarily revolve around springbok skipper Ashwell Prince, Herschelle Gibbs, Boeta Dippenar and Jacques Rudolph. Pace bowling will be spearheaded by Makaya Ntini, supported by Andrew Hall, Shaun Pollock, and Andre Nel whilst Nicky Boje is the sole spinner in the squad. |

Mahela Jayawardane has been reappointed captain after his brilliant performance both with the bat and the captaincy in England. All eyes will be on in form batsman Sanath Jayasuriya who is back in the test squad after his retirement from test cricket. In addition, cricketing enthusiasts will also be looking forward to the performance of Muttiah Muralidaran who is expected to further reduce the gap between himself and the world record holder Shane Warne. Murali currently stands at 635 test wickets whilst Warne is at 685. Apart from Mahela, Sanath and Murali, strong support is expected from other players Kumar Sangakkara, Upul Tharanga, Chaminda Vaas and Lasith Malinga.
