World Records Tumble at Janashakthi Test Series 2006
After 1810 Test matches played in the history of 129 years of test cricket, during the Janashakthi Test Series played between Sri Lanka and South Africa, in Colombo, 2006, two tiny Sri Lankan batsmen became the first to post a test wicket partnership of over 600 runs. Janashakthi powered first test match at SSC was a historians dream and a statistician’s nightmare when skipper Mahela Jayawardane (374) and Kumar Sangakkara (287) were at the crease on third days play establishing a staggering world record partnership of 624 runs for any wicket in first class and test cricket both.

   WORLD RECORD (624 runs)

Mahela Jayawardane (374 runs)

 Kumar Sangakkara     (287 runs)

The anticipation of the home crowd that their local hero Mahela would surpass the all time batting record of Brian Lara, which is 400 runs was finally shattered by Andrew Nell by castling him with a beauty which made the cheering crowd slump to their seats. Mahela’s mammoth score of 374 is the highest by any Sri Lankan and fourth highest in the world.

Some of the other milestones and records during the first test match which was won comprehensively by Sri Lanka with an innings and 153 runs are;
  Highest total of 756 runs by Sri Lanka against South Africa
  Highest ever total against South Africa by any country
  South Africa’s first innings score of 169 is their lowest against Sri Lanka
  World’s second worst bowling performance by Nicky Boje with 65-5-221-0.Mohamed Khan of Pakistan who went wicket less conceding 259 runs against West Indies in 1957/58 is holding the record.
  South Africa’s worst bowling performance in a test match again by Nicky Boje surpassing Cyril Vincent who took 2 for 188 against England in 1935.
  Kumar Sangakkara with his magnificent 287 became the 3rd highest run getter for Sri Lanka in Test Cricket

The Janashakthi Test Series also coincided with the 25th anniversary celebrations of Test Cricket in Sri Lanka who was elevated to test rankings in 1981 with the full membership in ICC. Celebrations took place just prior to the start of the 2nd Janashakthi test match played at the P. Saravanamuttu stadium. P Saravanamuttu stadium is incidentally considered as the birthplace of Sri Lankan test cricket having hosted Sri Lanka’s inaugural test match against England in 1982.

Test cricket was at its very best at the second and final test match which saw Sri Lanka entering a new era of test cricket pulling off one of the most gripping results in the history of the game to win by a wicket and hair’s breadth as Sri Lanka won in a nail-biting climax to clinch the Janashakthi Test Series 2-0. Set a victory target of 352, Sri Lanka completed its highest ever-successful run chase in Test Cricket made possible by Mahela Jayawardane’s sound 123 and Sanath Jayasuriya’s quick 73. The match which was expected to end casually after lunch on the final day suddenly took an unexpected turn and appeared that Sri Lanka was almost on the verge of blowing up four days of hard work in just a flash and the line between victory and defeat kept narrowing to the finest until finally Lasith Malinga straight-drove Nicky Boje to mid-on boundary to post winning runs.
World record-breaking brand ambassador of Janashakthi Insurance Muttiah Muralidaran emerged man-of-the-series for his outstanding 22-wicket haul in 2 tests. Once again Murali created a few more milestones and became only the second player after Shane Warne to take more than 100 test scalps against the South Africans. He also surpassed the 650-wicket milestone in test cricket and his tally now stands at 657, not too far away from the current world record holder Shane Warne with 685 wickets.
Janashakthi Insurance, which is synonymous with major sports sponsorships of the country, completed its fifth successful cricket series sponsorship. Incidentally all these encounters have been comprehensively won by Sri Lanka out playing their opponents in every department of the game. The company, which is also well known for its unique and innovative trophy deliveries in past with Helicopter and parachute drops delivered the handsome Janashakthi challenge trophy to the grounds on a Kandyan Perahera style elephant top accompanied by traditional Kandyan dances and pretty lasses.
