Independence Cup Racing in Nuwara Eliya

Insurance Co. Ltd, the emerging leader in
the Sri Lankan insurance industry has joined
hands with the Sri Lanka Turf Club to
sponsor the Independence Cup, which was held
at the Nuwaraeliya Race course grounds on
Saturday the 4th of February 2006 commencing
10.00 a.m. in the morning.
Many thoroughbred
horses entered for the races on this day and
leading Sri Lankan jockeys who have ridden
in Middle Eastern countries were in action.
The main event of the day was the
“Independence Cup” for thoroughbred horses
Class 1, running over a distance of 8
Furlongs. The other races were the
“Janashakthi Full Option Trophy” for Class
II & III, thoroughbred Horses handicap race,
“Janashakthi Trophy” for Class IV
thoroughbred horse. “Janashakthi Nivahana
Trophy“ for thoroughbred Class V horses, and
“Life Unlimited Trophy” for Sri Lankan Bred
horses.
Horse racing is
recognized as a leading sport
internationally and was once very popular in
Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka Turf Club is over 125
years old and is actively involved in
promoting racing as a competitive and
leisure sport.
