Annual Athletes Sponsorship Programme 2010
 
Colombo 19 November 2009. Janashakthi Insurance PLC launched its annual Athletes Sponsorship Programme for 2010, thus continuing this project for the third consecutive year. Under this programme 09 outstanding outstation student athletes will receive a monthly sponsorship, an incentive payment based on individual performances and overseas travel assistance for any international meets for which they are selected through 2010. In addition they will also be supported with training guidance, technical advice and other such support to enhance their young careers.
 
 
Shashipraba Jayasinghe - 19 Years
  (St. Joseph’s Girls School, Kegalle: Outstanding Sprinter, who has represented Sri Lanka in National Team at the Asian Athletics Championships in China. Best Athlete at Senior John Tarbet & National School Games)
Ishara Dayananda - 17 Years
  (Ferguson Girls High School, Ratnapura, Outstanding 100 meter Hurdler and Sprinter. Won a number of best Athlete awards)
Nayomika Jayatilaka - 16 Years
  (Sumana Balika Vidyalaya, Ratnapura, 400 meter Hurdler and 400 meter Sprinter has already represented Sri Lanka at the Asian Youth Games in Singapore)
Medhani Wickramanayake – 14 Years
  (Sri Sangamiththa Balika National Vidyalaya, Matale, Outstanding Junior Sprinter. Undefeated over last 3 years)
S. Thanusha - 17 Years
  (Arunodaya College, Jaffna Pole Vault – Age group Record Holder in 2009)
Nimesha Siriwardena - 15 Years
  (Galenbidunuwewa Central College, Galenbidunuwewa High Jump – Age group record holder in 2009, represented Sri Lanka at the Asian Youth Games in Singapore)
Chamika Jayamini - 16 Years
  (Sumana Balika Vidyalaya, Ratnapura Long Distance Runner – Undefeated over 800, 1500 & 3000m in 2009)
Pabasara Senanayake - 16 Years
  (St. Joseph’s Girls School, Kegalle Sprinter - Already represented Sri Lanka at the World Youth Championships in Italy and at the Asian Youth Games in Singapore – Undefeated in age group for 3 years)
Hiruni Weerasekera - 18 Years
  (Ferguson Girls High School, Ratnapura Long Jump / Triple Jump – Undefeated in age group in 2009)
 

Shashipraba Jayasinghe, Nayomika Jayatilaka, Ishara Dayananda and Medhani Wickramanayake have been re-extended for the 2nd year and the rest have been selected based on performances and economic challenges that have been overcome during 2009. All of the above have recorded outstanding and consistent performances during 2009 and have remained unbeaten in their age group, all are award winners and 7 of the 9 are age group record holders.

Speaking at the occasion Managing Director of JIC PLC, Prakash Schaffter said that the Company was happy to sponsor Sri Lanka’s budding athletes for the third consecutive year and thus be instrumental in the country’s future success in athletics. “While being our CSR initiative in nation building, this programme aims to encourage these outstanding rural athletes and inspire them to keep the Sri Lanka flag flying high at international level”.
“We at Janashakthi consider it our bounden duty to give back to society. It is with this goal that we have supported many sports in the past and still continue to do so. We in the business field have a lot to learn from sports. One should never be complacent but instead strive to improve and do better with each triumph. Therein lies real success”.
Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Defence and President of the Amateur Athletic Association (AAA) of Sri Lanka Maj. Gen (Retd) Palitha Fernando thanked JIC for its gesture of sharing its profits with society by supporting the development and training of Sri Lanka athletes to reach World class standards. “We in Sri Lanka have great potential both in Colombo and in the outstations. It is important that our athletes have, and constantly develop, a winning mindset. This together with a 100% commitment, are the key ingredients for a successful career”.
Mr. Bjorn Wangaman, International Amateur Athletic Federation – Director of Athletic Development and Mr. Prema Pinnawela, Secretary of the AAA of Sri Lanka also addressed the gathering.
The co-ordinator of the Janashakthi Athletic Sponsorship Project, Mr. Bertal Pinto-Jayawardena, General Manager – Finance & Planning, who delivered a presentation titled “Road map to victory and success” highlighted that this was yet another contribution from Janashakthi Insurance, towards Nation Building and explained that it was Janashakthi’s expectation that the selected Athletes would in the near future bring pride to Sri Lanka on the International stage.
Mr. Yogananda Wijesundera, Special Guest addressing the Athletes shared valuable developmental insights and Mr. Ravi Liyanage, General Manager – Sales & Marketing delivered the welcome address.
Janashakthi also has in employment 3 other outstanding National Athletes namely, Priyangika Madumanthi, T. Anusha and Amali Wijesinghe and takes pride in the fact that all of the Company employed Athletes and the 2009 sponsored Athletes have retained their places in the National Athletic Senior and Junior Pools with 3 of them namely, Madumanthi, Shashipraba & Nayomika having represented Sri Lanka at International level during 2009.
Janashakthi looks forward to these Athletes reaching greater heights of success and bringing honour to Sri Lanka in 2010!
